Instead of stepping down, Urquía Carreño sent all 18 of those Lodge Masters to be sent in front of the Supreme Court of Masonic Justice for trials and investigations, and also ordered Viñas Alonso to be tried by the Supreme Court.

Belize was granted independence on 21 September 1981. Guatemala refused to recognize the new nation because of its longstanding territorial dispute, claiming that Belize belonged to Guatemala.
